The best gifts for new mums (by an actual mum)

By Elsa F | Updated 16 October 2024

This article was inspired by a recent Slack conversation I had. My workmate asked if I had any thoughts on what to gift her friend, a first-time mum who'd just gone through a traumatic labour.

"I was thinking of getting her a cosy cashmere jumper," she suggested. Oh what sweet optimism – a gift that's lovely in theory, but just not practical. Imagine the stains it would accumulate for a start – and with a newborn, who has time for hand-washing cashmere between breastfeeding, nappy changes, and the general chaos of survival?

So, instead I offered her some more realistic suggestions. Here are 20 non-baby things a new mum would truly appreciate as a gift.

Dabba drop meal delivery kit

Meal delivery vouchers

DabbaDrop homemade curries, from £45

The one thing mums of Reddit all agree makes a great gift? Food, food, food. There's barely time to eat, let alone cook, in those first heady weeks of newborn life.

We love local services like DabbaDrop – the East London meal delivery subscription that’s a true lifesaver. Or give them the freedom to choose a few different meals when needed with a simple Deliveroo or UberEats gift card. And the best bit? They get to eat foods they weren't able to over the past nine months, like fresh sushi.

Letterbox coffee break

The Perfect Blend Coffee Letterbox, £20 from M&S

If she's a fan of M&S food, this one's going to shoot you straight to the top of the list as best gifter/friend. This letterbox-sized bundle of joy contains three of their coffee blends – Jump Start, House Blend, and Italian – paired with a handful of sweet treats, from carrot cake to chocolate biscuits and indulgent millionaires shortbread.

Coffee shop gift card

Gails Bakery gift cards, from as little as £5

The first few trips out alone with a baby can be daunting. Starting with small, local trips – like to a nearby coffee shop or bakery – can help. If you're not able to join your new mum friend for moral support, sending a coffee shop gift card from afar is a thoughtful touch. You can present it as a way for her to find her rhythm, establishing a habit of getting out of the house and doing something enjoyable for herself – with or without the baby.

I loved taking coffee breaks with my daughter after our park walks – it became our little tradition and made me feel proud that I was still able to do some of the things I did before, but with her.

Luxe shower oil

Diptyque Do Son shower oil, £48

This gently foaming shower gel smells like tuberose and orange, leaving skin silky with apricot oil. The scent will quickly turn a two-minute shower into a spa-like experience, giving her a little dose of self-care amid a stressful day.

Delicious-smelling deodorant

AKT natural deodorant starter set, £25

If you saw the words 'natural deodorant' and thought 'that's the last thing she needs', hold up a second. AKT's award-winning formulas hit different, thanks to beautiful subtle scents and a creamy texture that keeps you feeling dry and fresh. It's a comforting, sensory treat for managing postpartum body odour (yes, that's a thing).

Hand cream

Nursem Caring hand cream, £19.99

Frequent nappy changing means frequent hand-washing, which can mean dry, sore skin. Enter Nursem: a brand developed by paediatric intensive care nurse Antonia Philp who developed contact dermatitis from hand washing and sanitising at work. Nursem's signature hand cream contains manuka honey, allantoin and plant oils to restore the protective barrier that keeps skin hydrated – a bedside table hero.

postpartum essentials including bath soak and perineal spray

Postpartum hamper

Postpartum essentials bundle, £47

Putting together a hamper of postpartum essentials tailored to their birth and recovery experience is a really thoughtful gift. If you're not sure where to begin, this bundle from Mum Bub Hub is a practical and thoughtful set designed to support recovery after an uncomplicated vaginal birth. You could add in items like disposable underwear and nicer sanitary towels, which are now much easier to come by than in the past. FridaMom offer a postpartum essentials kit for £44.99, while Lansinoh does the full works for £110 - ideal to gift before she gives birth, too.

dry shampoo kit

Dry shampoo set

Living Proof dry shampoo set, £33

This would make a super practical gift – alone or as part of a hamper to get her through the busiest newborn days and nights. The set features two of Living Proof's popular dry shampoos – their original and advanced formulas – which feature a clever cocktail of conditioning agents to make hair feel fresh but still soft.

At-home massage voucher

Urban massage gift voucher, from £20

Your body feels sore in all sorts of new ways when you're a new mum. How much I used my arms and hands definitely came as a surprise to me anyway, with my shoulders and back aching in new ways from carrying and feeding my baby.

Treating her to a home massage with Urban is the ultimate thoughtful remedy. She won't need to worry about travel and booking far in advance as she can book on the same-day, from 7am-11pm. There's also dedicated post-partum massages and osteopathy available, performed by therapists with specialist training.

New mum facial voucher

Facial or spa voucher

At-home facial, from £33

The best new mum gifts are those that give her maximum choice. Some new parents won't want to leave home for a bit, so a voucher for an at-home spa treatment is perfect. With Urban, you can load up a gift card with any amount, and then they get to choose what treatment to enjoy and when, including pampering facials and nail treatments.

Alternatively, browse local spas near you to treat them to a trip out of the house. A nail appointment is great because the results last a long time and help you feel polished, plus it gets you out of the house for a good amount of time. You can even offer to help organise it to take the admin off her list!

Hair accessories

Damson Madder leopard scrunchie, £18

You never appreciate clothes and hair accessories quite as much as when you become a mum. Being able to throw on a nice hair band or sunglasses before leaving the house helps you feel put-together, even when you feel anything but. Scrunchies, Alice bands and headscarves all fit the bill – and keep hair out of baby hands! – avoid gifting pendant earrings for the same reason.

Lingerie voucher

Lonely Lingerie voucher, for sets from £100

Nice underwear is another way you can feel a bit more yourself while navigating life as a new parent, whether that's through soft bamboo maternity underwear or something fancier a few months in. A gift voucher for a lingerie brand is a lovely way for her to treat herself, and even go and get measured if her bra size has changed.

Cosy pyjamas

Cosy pyjamas

TBco pink checkerboard pyjamas, from £99

If there's anything you've taken from this guide, it's that every new mum could use a little luxury. These colourful TBCo pyjamas are a brilliant gift for those long days and sleepless nights. Made from breathable cotton and with an oversized fit (and adjustable drawstring waist) they're a safe-bet postpartum. They even come with a reusable cotton bag for travel and a matching scrunchy.

A night to herself

Hoxton hotel vouchers, from £50

It's unlikely she's ready to spend a night away just yet, but gifting the promise of that during the newborn phase can give her something to look forward to on long, sleepless nights. When she's ready, offer your help planning for someone she trusts to care for the baby and manage night feeds.

portable lamp gift

Portable lamp

Portable lucide lamp, £40.99

Night feeds are not the time for the 'big light'. These sweet portable lamps make a great alternative. Rechargeable and with three brightness settings, they'll brighten up the dark hours (without waking sleeping companions). Plus, a carry handle makes it easy to transport with one hand.

Wireless headphones

AirPods 4, from £129

Wireless headphones make an excellent gift for new mums for hands-free convenience. Being able to take calls while pushing the stroller, carrying the baby, or when they’ve fallen asleep on you is a godsend. They're quite expensive as new mum gifts go, so might be better suited as a group gift or a 'push present' from a partner or family member. For a more affordable option, the Anker Soundcore headphones are well reviewed.

Good quality raincoat

Rains Curve Jacket, £105

Umbrellas lose their usefulness when you've got a buggy to push, so a decent raincoat is essential for new mums in rainy climates. Rains' coats are machine washable at 40 degrees and lightweight too – handy for throwing in the buggy just in case.

Simple acts of service

Free!

One of the most thoughtful gifts you can give a new mum is simply offering your time and help. Small acts of service, like dropping off a homemade meal, doing a quick food shop, or tidying up her space can make all the difference without feeling intrusive.

My top tip? Give her specific options for her to choose from rather than keeping the offer open ended. For example, don't say "let me know if I can help!". Instead, say "I'm free between 1pm-4pm and can either come over and watch the baby while you shower, or do a quick clean around the house for you – which would be most helpful?".

Baby clothes freshly washed

Pro laundry service voucher

Laundryheap gift card, from £25 for mixed washes starting at £17.95

Take a load off her mind, literally, by gifting door-to-door laundry care. Companies like Laundryheap and I hate ironing make it easy for a pile of washing to be magically whisked away, cleaned, pressed and returned a couple days later.

House cleaning voucher

Professional one-off clean

Housekeep one-off clean, from £18.50/hour

Angels do exist, in the form of professional cleaners who get just how hard it is to manage the weekly clean on top of everything else new parenthood brings. Treat your friend to a voucher for a professional clean from a local service, or via apps like Housekeep.

How to nail a thoughtful new mum-gift

The best gifts for new mums are those that offer practicality, comfort and a little bit of indulgence. Consider items like nutritious meal deliveries, coffee shop gift cards, wireless headphones or a night to herself. Gifts that support self-care, such as luxurious shower gels, hand creams and professional cleaning services, are also appreciated, as they help her reclaim a sense of normalcy amid the chaos of new motherhood.

When selecting a gift for a new mum, it’s best to avoid items that require a lot of maintenance or special care. This includes delicate fabrics like cashmere, which can easily be stained or damaged. Avoid gifts that may feel more like a chore than a treat, such as items that necessitate extensive setup or those that don't align with her current needs and lifestyle.

Two nice but impractical gifts are lipstick (you kiss the baby all the time and will leave lipstick on them constantly) and pendant earrings (babies love to grab them).

Supporting a new mum can be as simple as offering practical help and thoughtful gifts. Consider organising meal deliveries, helping with household chores, or gifting her a voucher for a relaxing at-home massage. Acts of service, such as babysitting for an hour so she can take a shower, also make a big difference in her postpartum recovery.

Affordable gifts for new mums can still feel special and thoughtful. Look for items like cute hand creams, coffee shop gift cards, or a set of dry shampoos. Simple acts of service, like running errands or providing a home-cooked meal, can also be invaluable without costing much.

Helping a new mum without overwhelming her is all about being supportive and considerate. Offer specific assistance, like running errands or cooking a meal, rather than asking if she needs help, which can add pressure. Be mindful of her space and routines, and check in regularly to see how you can best support her in a way that feels helpful, not intrusive.
