7 steps to clear skin

We reveal the secrets to smooth, spot-free skin…

A recent survey found more than a third of those seeking private treatment for acne are over 35. Adult acne is more common in women as it’s linked to fluctuating hormones – so you may find you only experience breakouts in the week before your period. But even if you’ve been plagued by spots since your teens, there are more ways than ever to blitz them.

1. Go low-GI

It was once thought the diet link with spots was a myth, but recent research has shown there is a connection after all. Carbs that release their energy rapidly, like mash and white bread, are the main culprits, studies show. So switch to slow-release carbs, such as wholegrain bread.

2. Choose oil-free options

Oil-based skincare products block pores, promoting spots. Sally Penford of the International Dermal Institute recommends staying away from heavy, creamy cleansers and using a water-soluble cleanser you can wash off, such as Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel.

3. Pick skin-polishing ingredients

Glycolic and lactic acid-based products gently polish and smooth skin, blitzing excess oil and dead skin cells. This is ideal if you’re concerned about the first signs of ageing as well as spots. Topical retinoids also tackle both acne and early wrinkles – you’ll need a prescription for a full-strength product but you can find retinoids in some high-street brands, such as Roc.

4. Try a facial peel

A light professional peel can help with both spots and scarring. Peels use intensive doses of glycolic, salicylic and trichloroacetic acid to stimulate the growth of healthy skin cells. Find them at clinics such as Medicetics.

5. Protect from the sun

It can be tempting to expose your skin to the sun to blitz spots but this can actually make the problem worse by triggering inflammation. Always wear an SPF on your face – but look for one that uses soothing physical blocks, such as zinc oxide, rather than chemical sunscreens, which can aggravate acne. Try Epionce Ultra Shield Lotion SPF50.

6. Tackle stress

Some research has shown stress can aggravate acne – and experts think it’s one of the reasons so many adults are now affected. Take time out to decompress, with meditation, a massage or yoga.

7. Smooth on a DIY mask

Honey and cinnamon both have soothing, antibacterial properties. Blend 2tbsp honey with 1tsp cinnamon and smooth over your face. Relax for 10 minutes before rinsing.
