The best spots in the UK for an active weekend away

Beach holidays can be great getaways, but sometimes a relaxing trip means getting out into nature and doing some exploring. Movement is just as important as stillness when it comes to soothing the mind, so when a massage at home in London just won’t cut it, it’s time to think about an adventure weekend away. Unsure where to go? We’ve found four of our favourite spots in the UK for active holidays that will not only show you breathtaking views but bring you brilliant stories and leave you feeling just a little bit out of breath.

Home to some of the England’s most beautiful beaches, Cornwall is a must visit destination if you’re into watersports. It’s closeness to the Atlantic Ocean means that the area sees great swells making it ideal for surfers, while the many National Trust-protected areas offer great places for rambling. If you like your activities a little more extreme head to Hangloose Adventure at the Eden Project. Here you can ride the UK’s longest zip wire, dare to go on the giant Gravity Swing and freefall from a 10-storey building.

The Lake District

One of the most picturesque spots in the North of England, the peaceful lakes of this national park in Cumbria are perfect for canoeing, sailing and windsurfing. If you’d rather be on dry land, why not try exploring the rugged landscape with some walking, cycling or off-roading? If that’s not adrenaline-inducing enough for you then visit Lake District Gyroplanes and try your hand at helping to steer a miniature plane. Get flying lessons while taking in the breathtaking landscape from above.

The New Forest

If you want an activity holiday that’s only slightly strenuous, New Forest National Park in the South of England should be your first choice. Here you can play golf, ride horses or take an expert-led hike through the most scenic spots. The local Beaulieu River also gives you the chance to canoe or kayak to the pub. This brilliant activity take you on a 90-minute journey down the river until you arrive at Master Builders pub, where you can stop off for a pint or two before heading back to the boat yard.

Quite possibly the most adventurous spot in the UK, people travel across the country to scale mount Snowdon at this national park. Mountain climbing is of course the number one activity here, but mountain biking, rambling and white water rafting are all popular too. If you’re looking for something a little more unusual, the area’s Llechwedd Slate Caverns make for great underground activities. Zip World offers visitors the chance to zip lining through the caverns and play on giant bouncy castles hidden deep underground.
