7 alternative Mother’s Day ideas

Don’t rely on the usual flowers and chocolates to make your mum feel special – we’ve got some quirkier treat ideas to spoil her which don’t cost the earth!

1. Bake her a special cake

For a healthier twist, why not get on board with the trend for veggie-based cakes and seek out a recipe that uses ingredients like butternut squash, beetroot or sweet potato? Try popular blogger Deliciously Ella for ideas and present it in a pretty 50s-style tin for extra brownie points.

2. Book her a massage

For the ultimate indulgence, treat your mum to a massage in the comfort of her own home. Buy her an Urban Massage gift voucher so she can pamper herself at a time that suits her. Gift vouchers start from £20.

3. Take her out

The chances are, time with you is one of the best presents your mum could receive. Take her out for a stroll around a gallery followed by tea and cake, or book the matinee performance of a musical she loves. Try The Kinks musical Sunny Afternoon or Guys and Dolls for some nostalgic fun.

4. Have a movie afternoon

Close the curtains and have an afternoon film-fest over a box of chocolates. Our Mother’s Day movie picks? The Kids Are Alright, Mamma Mia and Beaches. Don’t forget the tissues for the last one!

5. Make a ‘mum and me’ photo album

Gather up pictures of the two of you together over the years and put them into a photo album. Also, scan them so you have an online version (such as Flickr.com) you can share with the rest of the family on social media.

6. Cook it up

Treat your mum to a voucher for a fabulous cookery lesson – such as a session at the Vegetarian Society Cooking School. Or sign her up to a sushi making workshop. Whatever food she’d love to learn about, there’s a cookery class to suit.

7. Invest in a beautiful book

Does your mum love reading? Get her a gorgeous special edition of one of her favourite books – like this luxury hardback edition of To Kill a Mockingbird.
