Keeping clients safe: Understanding your massage table’s weight limit
Everyone deserves to feel safe, welcome and respected during a treatment. Weight limits do relate to body size – but they’re about equipment safety, not judgment. Knowing your table’s limits means you can care for every client with confidence and professionalism.
Look for the CE safety mark
This mark means your table meets essential safety standards. It should be clearly visible on the product or in the manual.
Understand working vs. static weight
Massage tables are built to support two kinds of weight:
- Working weight – the weight your table can safely support during a treatment (including movement and pressure)
- Static weight – the weight the table can hold when someone is lying still. This number is usually much higher, but less relevant during a treatment.
Always check the working weight when choosing a table – it’s the most important for safety.
Aluminium and wooden tables are equally strong
Most modern aluminium and wooden massage tables support a working weight of up to 267kg (35 stone).
Supporting all clients with care and confidence
If you're unsure whether your table is suitable for a particular treatment setup, it’s okay to check – your client’s comfort and safety come first.
How you communicate this matters
Be mindful of your body language, facial expressions and tone, and focus on conveying care and professionalism, not judgment.
You can also:
- Use a step stool to help clients onto the table
- Stay nearby to steady the table if needed
- Encourage clients to move slowly and gently
- Focus on treatment areas that minimise movement
Being thoughtful and prepared helps every client feel comfortable and respected.
