Thai Yoga Massage performed on a man

This ancient practice can leave you feeling calm and refreshed.

You may not be that familiar with Thai Yoga Massage so we have caught up with Daniel to help you find out a little more about this refreshing treatment.

What is a Thai Yoga Massage?

Thai Yoga massage is also known as Nuad Boraen, Traditional Thai Massage or Thai Massage and is a form of therapeutic massage. “Put simply: you lie there while your masseuse performs yoga on you,” explains massage therapist Daniel.

Thai Yoga Massage aims to clear an energy line system – the Ten Sen – through which the body’s natural life force flows. Blockages in this Ten Sen are traditionally thought to cause aches, pains and disease.

So how does the full body massage work?

The therapist uses fingers, hands, feet and elbows to apply pressure to important points of the energy lines, together with gentle stretching and applied Hatha Yoga to free blocked energy and unlock the body’s healing potential, restoring balance and harmony.

Do I have to chant?

No. But you have to be in a meditative mood.

What can I get out of a Thai Yoga Massage?

While it can treat ailments such as headaches, knee pain, back, shoulder and neck pain, premenstrual tension, it is especially effective for numbness or loss of feeling in conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, or after a stroke, and can help with pain relief during labour.

And what about my wellbeing?

“In our everyday lives we’re tense and breath shallowly and rapidly. Deep breathing and stretching allow you to focus more deeply into the stretch to relax,” says yoga instructor Annie Rice. The treatment can improve flexibility; relaxing, restoring and energising.

Does it hurt?

“Thai massage involves a lot of deep stretches and compressions, which are challenging at times, but should never be painful. Avoid it if you have mobility issues but it works a treat if you’re feeling sluggish after an illness or if you have to sit at a desk all day. You should leave feeling more relaxed, mentally focused and limber afterwards,” explains Daniel.

But what should I wear?

Traditional Thai yoga massage is practiced fully clothed, using no oils because it’s more healing than relaxing.
