Four aromatherapy oils to boost your massage

Everyone loves an aromatherapy massage, but how do the essential oils used improve your experience?

When your therapist asks you to pick an aromatherapy massage oil, do you actually know why you choose it – or does it just sound nice? According to aromatherapist Louise Crockart, each has specific therapeutic benefits. ‘All essential oils have varying degrees of anti-bacterial or anti-viral properties, and are called essential as they are regenerating, oxygenating and the immune defence of plants. They are 75-100 times more concentrated than dried herbs and flowers – so don’t underestimate the effect a few drops can have on you.’ Here’s our pick of the best:

  • Lavender has an evocative fragrance reminiscent of summer. But it’s not just calming – it’s one of the most potent remedies in the plant world, helping with burns, migraines, insomnia, insect bites, skin problems, infections, stress and nervous tension. If you have respiratory tract problems (colds, coughs, flu) this is your oil.
  • Frankincense stimulates blood flow, so is mentally rejuvenating and a great way of clearing brain fug! For women, it’s helpful for irregular periods as it regulates production of oestrogen, and is a great support for those going through menopause.
  • Rose Otto should do the trick if you’re feeling stressed or suffer from anxiety, as it balances shaky hormone levels. It also strengthens the collagen-elastin network of the skin so is a great option for toning up tired skin.
  • Ylang-Ylang, with its sweet, instantly recognisable fragrance works wonders for reducing stress. As well as being calming, it’s an aphrodisiac and can soothe headaches, nausea, skin conditions, stimulate hair growth, reduce high blood pressure and combat intestinal problems.

With every essential oil, it’s vital you check with the person doing your massage about any potential side effects. Ylang-ylang, for instance, can lead to headaches with overuse, while lavender should not be used if you’re pregnant, nursing or have epilepsy. Once you’ve done that, lie back, breath in those lovely fragrances and tune out…
