How to: Give your hair a salon-quality blow dry at home

While salons stay closed, we chatted with Barber + Blow co-founder Benjamin May to pick up some at-home haircare tips. Here’s his guide to the perfect at-home blow dry:

What you’ll need

Step one: Clean

“First, shampoo your hair twice (I recommend Evo’s Therapist Shampoo), then partially towel dry your hair before conditioning. Wrap your hair in a towel and leave for a minimum of ten minutes before rinsing.”

Step two: De-knot

“Next, towel dry your hair, then comb or brush out any knots. After that, apply your styling cream (I love Evo’s Head Mistress cuticle sealer and Root Canal for a smooth, voluminous blow-dry). Make sure you’ve worked your products through your hair thoroughly.”

Step three: Rough dry

“You then need to rough dry (that’s a general once-over with a hair dryer), tipping your head upside down to stop your roots from sticking to your scalp. Brush through your roots with your fingers create volume, and keep going until your hair’s about 90% dry.”

Step three: Brush

“Take a brush and start to lift your roots, focusing in particular on your hairline and parting. Take a small section of hair from each side of your parting, place the brush behind it, and blow dry while pulling the brush up and away from the roots. Point the hairdryer towards the root, too – that’ll lift it while keeping the rest of your hair smooth.”

Step four: Add wave

“Wrap your hair around your brush (the smaller the brush the tighter the curl), and apply heat. If you have long hair try not to use too small a brush – it might lead to tangles.”

Step five: Flip to add volume

“While your hair’s still hot, flip it in the opposite direction to the way it usually falls. This will harden the cuticles, creating more volume when you flip it back. Continue this process in sections all the way along your parting, then along the sides and back .

Once your hair’s dry you can add some optional extra curls by wrapping some of your sections around a heated curling wand or straightener. Then simply finish with a spritz of hairspray and a drop of serum on the ends. One beautiful blow-dry.”
